End of the Row in Choir?

I'm in my A Cappella choir, and we've been moved around in our rows a few times, but i'm always put at the far end. We have the arrangement of bes behind sopranos next to altos with tenors behind. I'm an alto and keep getting sat at the end of my row, farthest from the sopranos. I'm just curious what the organization and seating does, like what techniques conductors use. Does it really make a difference whether you're on the end or in the middle?
