Why don't Americans think of Indians when referring to Asians?

Asians or orientals have been here longer and in american media. East Indians started becoming much more known and common in american neighborhoods from the early 90's only. Thats why. Besides, I don't understand why us Indians like being called asians, because we are genetically different from orientals. I prefer to be called east indian. Its appropriate.
